Solidarity Statement
Art is a powerful tool for appreciating the unheard voices of our neighbors,
educating beyond our individual experiences, and creating cultural change, rebellion, and rebirth.
All of us at Rountree Gallery stand with our community in unequivocally condemning the murder of George Floyd and the hundreds of others like him. His murder was but one manifestation of the systemic racism, dehumanization, and violence inflicted on black and brown bodies, hearts, and souls by our law enforcement and government. We support and encourage the fundamental right to speak up, speak out, and speak truth to power without the threat of violence. Over the past months, we have seen citizens from around the world rise up and rebel against institutions that perpetuate racial injustice and oppression.
Silence is a powerful form of violence. As a nonprofit organization that serves our area's art community, we firmly believe that our individual and collective voices deserve safe places for expression. Our tagline at Rountree Gallery is create * appreciate * educate, which compels us to seek out and foster platforms for community expression to raise and amplify the voices of those confronting violence, marginalization, oppression, and racism.
As we look for opportunities to harness the power of art to transform and create cultural change,
we also want to hear from our community about how we can best meet their needs to share their talents,
but also share their voices through art.
